The cost of hiring a tree surgeon (also known as an arborist) can vary widely depending on factors such as the size and type of trees, the location of the trees, and the services required. In general, you can expect to pay anywhere from a hundred to several thousand pounds for tree surgeon services.

Winter is an ideal time to prune, as the lack of leaves on deciduous trees and shrubs enables you to see what you’re doing more clearly. What’s more, since sap is not as active during the winter, cuts are less likely to ‘bleed’, and the tree or shrub sustains less of a shock than being chopped when sap is in full flow.

If you wish to prune or fell a tree on your property you may require planning permission or need to notify your Local Planning Authority (LPA). This depends on whether your tree is protected by either a Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area.

If you are unsure about the status of trees which you intend to prune or fell (or you simply require further information) you should contact your council.

If a tree is affected by a disease or pest then it may start to show signs that it is sick. One or several of the following symptoms may be present in the tree:

Leaf discoloration or blight. Discoloured blotches or dead areas on the tree’s leaves, particularly at a time of the season when leaves should appear healthy.

Defoliation. Trees losing their leaves at the wrong time of year.

Root decay. Broken roots or signs of fungus present in the roots.

Fungus spores. Appearing over the tree’s bark.

Dead branches. Branches will appear dry and break easily.

Bark abnormalities. Deep cracks, splits or holes will appear in the bark.

Soft, crumbly wood.Tree may effectively be decaying from the inside out.
